About Us

tmsaTMSA is North Carolina’s premier public charter school district with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) focus. We serve more than 3,000 students from kindergarten through 12th grade in our schools.

We are tuition-free and operated by an independent nonprofit board of directors. Our first school, Triad Math and Science Academy, was established in 2008 in Greensboro by a group of public charter school advocates who supported effective, diverse, and well-funded public charter schools in North Carolina. As increasingly high demand exceeded the number of seats available, Triad was followed by Triangle Math and Science Academy in Cary in 2012 and Queen City STEM School in Charlotte in 2015.

We are lifelong learners with big hearts. As our motto “Scientia - Sapientia - Pax” signifies in Latin, we seek knowledge, pursue wisdom, and foster peace in all we do. Our robust academic program and character education develop students' skills to live in harmony with themselves, with others, and with the natural environment.

We provide a high-quality and enriching education that equips students with 21st-century skills in a safe, nurturing, and culturally-responsive learning environment supported by our strong school, family, and community partnership.

We are committed to being among the best public charter schools in the U.S. TMSA schools are high performing schools, earning high performance grades from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for several years. Triangle Math and Science Academy is recognized by Niche as one of the best ten charter high schools in North Carolina for 2020 and 2021.

TMSA was among the first in North Carolina to transition to remote instruction right after the COVID-19 outbreak in March 2020. More than 90% of the parents expressed high rates of satisfaction with the quality of TMSA’s synchronous remote instruction during these challenging times. Its remote instruction uses e-learning systems that involve real-time chat and videoconferencing and requires students' active participation.

TMSA’s Education Model: Science and Character Education for Wisdom and Peace

TMSA’s Education Model focuses on empowering students to become change makers, cultivating leadership skills, and global education. We nurture minds and instill the joy of learning through a whole child teaching approach.

We implement a research-based academic curriculum with a strong emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Our students are equipped with strong core knowledge and in-demand skills that targets to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world. Our education model is also aligned with nationally and statewide recognized standards such as National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards, National Science Education Standards and North Carolina Standard Course of Study and Common Core Standards.

We employ active learning methods aimed to enhance the learning process by shifting the focus of teaching from teacher to learners. In this structure, we apply technology-supported, assessment-driven, and cognitively-oriented instruction in small classes, curriculum-led improvement, extended programs and strong partnerships between families and the schools.

  • Technology-supported Instruction: Technology will undoubtedly continue to evolve and TMSA schools are committed to adjusting themselves to align with its advancement. We incorporate a variety of technologies into instruction to create more engaged learning environment for our students. With TMSA’s technology-supported education, we are able to accommodate the different learning styles of our students and improve their collaboration. It can also help our teachers form a better communication with the parents and their colleagues.
  • Assessment-driven Instruction: TMSA knows the power of assessment-driven instruction and periodically collects data from reliable and valid assessments to measure student’s progress, identify students who need frequent progress monitoring, or implement intensive intervention programs to support at-risk students. We also utilize data to differentiate support for teachers and their professional development needs.
  • Cognitively-oriented Instruction: TMSA’s instruction is cognitively-oriented to ensure that all students acquire the knowledge, skills, behaviors, and attitudes to achieve their learning potential. We identify and assess how each student learn and then apply teaching in a way that favors their learning abilities.
  • Extended Programs: TMSA's before and after-school programs help improve students academic skills, enhance their social and emotional well-being. We provide a variety of before and after-school programs and extended weekend programs to enhance student learning and development beyond the classroom setting. These programs range from free tutoring to music, from foreign languages to art and robotics.
  • Family-School Partnership: We believe that passion for learning begins at home. TMSA strongly encourage families to engage in and take an active part of student learning process. Besides parent-teacher conferences, parent volunteering, and family nights, TMSA takes pride in its unique home visit program that shows our teachers' sincere desire to assist and work with families for their kids' overall wellbeing.

And Character Education:

TMSA's education model utilizes the time in school as an opportunity to explain and reinforce the core values upon which character is formed. We teach students to understand, care about and act on respect, justice, civic virtue, citizenship, and responsibility for self and others. As our motto in Latin "Scientia - Sapientia - Pax" signifies, our character education develops students' skills to live in harmony with oneself, with others, and with the natural environment.
